When I heard Superman's agonized groaning behind the effects of the
kryptonite, on KWK, St. Louis's Mutual Network station in the heyday of
radio days, I was really, really afraid that the Man of Steel was really,
really going to die! It was heart-rending!

I hadn't yet caught on that 1) Superman was not a real person and that 2)
the hero cannot die.

With certain exceptions, of course.

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die!"---a strange complaint to
come from the mouths of people who have had to live.
