Last night, Jeopardy had clue that included "Per the OED this 2-word term for websites and apps that allow users to network dates only back to 2004," referring to "social media".
Transcript from Access World News, Tavis Smiley show, NPR, 10/17/2002. Omar Wasow is speaking:"At the same time, there have been some--even though generally this new version I think is being well-received, the other kind of thing that you'll see in their focus is a shift to what they're calling social media, where rather than just putting up an article, they're really going to try to put up an article and make sure that it connects you to conversations about that article so that, for example, it's easier now on AOL to find another person who wants to chat about a topic you're interested in chatting about."
A serious search could no doubt push this back farther.
