When I was a young'un, back in the '40's and '50's, this was a method of
speaking taught to those throat-cancer survivors unlucky enough not to be
able to use one of those buzzing devices.
Of course, in those days, it didn't strike anyone as gross. You just felt
sorry for the guy.
