Although the Japanese Wikipedia (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%8B%E3%82%89%E6%8F%9A%E3%81%92#.E3.82.B6.E3.83.B3.E3.82.AE <https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%8B%E3%82%89%E6%8F%9A%E3%81%92#.E3.82.B6.E3.83.B3.E3.82.AE>) has a subentry for zangi, I don’t see this food on the English Wikipedia/Wiktionary or the Oxford Dictionary site.
1. Google Books has zero entries. The earliest Google website entry I see claims to be 1999:
YOU KNOW YOU'VE BEEN IN HOKKAIDO TOO LONG WHEN:

...you've forgotten the mainland equivalents for "zangi" (fried chicken), "tororo imo" (yams), or "toukibi" (corn on the cob).
2. The second-earliest entry I see is 2006

Starting in 2008, the word becomes much more popular.
