Well, but for the readers of the web post based in the U.K., where they're not "panties" but "knickers", nobody would understand, so the generic term is safer, just as the "soda" and "pop" and [generic] "Coke" speakers would all be covered by the umbrella of "soft drinks".  That *could* be the reason, no?  Let's not get our undergarments in a convolution.
