The Oxford Dictionary site and the Mac dictionary give the 1950s as the origin of “sipe,” saying the origin is unknown.

Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sipe <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sipe>) gives a date of approximately 888 with an origin of “sipian” and says it is related to “seep.”
