He was intending to mark it as usual in both black and white speech. Shands
is citing Bartlett as an argument from authority in support of Shands's own
assertion that the phenomenon is cross-racial in Mississippi.
Notice also the proscription by Allen, who was not concerned at all with
the speech-habits of "colored people."
