Coincidentally, last night I heard the expression "cat and dog fight" in Jean Harlow's 1933 film, Bombshell.

I was curious about whether "cat and dog fight" preceded "cat fight," and quickly found numerous examples on Chronicling America of non-sex specific "cat fights" as far back as the 1870s.
