An early ex. of present progressive for simple present?

In the 1928 movie _The Wedding March_, Fay Wray sniffs a posy and says
(according to the title) "Don't it smell sweet?" Her crude male escort
at the display of the Austrian Imperial Horse Guards replies, "I ain't
smellin' nothin' - but the stink o' horses."

I'd have expected, "I don't smell nothin'."
