Venture capitalists have used the phrase: You've got to jump off a
cliff and build your wings on the way down.

In the domain of computer technology I have heard the following analogy.

Designing an upgradable computer system is like designing a sports car
while riding a tricycle. You must upgrade the tricycle piece by piece
to yield the sports car, but you must keep riding the vehicle while it
is being transformed.
