The OED definition for planter:
OED def 9 for "planter" is: "U.S. regional (chiefly Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley). A snag formed by a tree trunk embedded in a more or less erect position in a river."
looks suspiciously like the one from DARE!
A tree or branch lodged rigidly in a river bed and constituting a hazard to navigation. esp Mississippi-Ohio Valleys<http://www.daredictionary.com.ezproxy.library.wisc.edu/search?rcode=region.Missip-Ohio%20Valleys> Cf sawyer 4<http://www.daredictionary.com.ezproxy.library.wisc.edu/view/dare/ID_00050213#ID_50213_004>
