1766 William Gilpin _The Lives of John Wicliff_ (Eighteenth Century Collections Online)  The latter were either idle or mischievous, the coarser among them battened on the poor, and the more ambitious, involving themselves in diplomacy and the intrigutes of courts, exercised the seame sort of influence which in aftertimes was practised by the Jesuits.
