Yes, we've already had casualties in our family.  My daughter is addicted, and my sister-in-law isn't far behind.  I fondly remember the semi-eponymous (well, it was Neko, not Neko Atsume) screen saver on my (very) old Mac, back when we were all into screen savers.  Neko was right up there with Flying Toasters and the Aquarium.  Sounds like the cat collecting is a bit more labor-intensive than watching kitties bounce off the edge of one's screen, though.
