"Being first on the block to announce something that has already happened."

SportsLog, Boston Globe, June 4, B3.

What was initially thought to be a premature tribute to the ailing Muhammad Ali proved to be prescient as the first of its kind when the Marlins unwittingly broke the news of the passing of the 74-year-old boxing legend with a videoboard tribute at Marlins Park.

It's not prescient if they "broke the news of the passing"; it would have been prescient had the tribute actually been premature -- and in very bad taste.
