own, v.

OED sense 8b (25 Nov 1997): To compromise or gain unauthorized
administrative control over (a computer, network, etc.). Esp. in to
get owned: to become compromised in this way. Cf. sense1b, and hack
v.1 20c.

It's a reply to a system administrator asking for pranks to leave
behind after leaving their job. This suggestion is to leave a
leetspeak message in the motd file, a message of the day shown after
someone logs in. A related meaning of owning is to have permission to
access files or folders on a computer system, and a hacker may leave
behind such a message to demonstrate and brag they've gained access.
