A couple of thoughts:

I have to bring up John Greenleaf Whittier's The Reformer:

O, backward-looking son of time !
The new is old, the old is new,
The cycle of a change sublime
Still sweeping through.

The poem was also turned into a hymn in the 19th century.

I also note that more modern translations of 2 Cor 5:17 are closer to the
phrase:
