the four-part definition of evangelical faith, articulated by historian David Bebbington: obedience to the Bible as the ultimate authority, belief in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross as the source of salvation, the necessity of a personal “born-again” conversion experience, and work to spread the Gospel.

The article notes that not all evangelicals believe in all four parts and that some people who do believe in all four do not use the label “evangelical”.

The article also says politics have made the word “evangelical” distasteful for many evangelicals and some are abandoning it. No new word seems to be forthcoming yet.
