"Or [someone] _hurt_ others"? Not "[someone] _hurts_ others"? That doesn't
make any sense! Then, I flashed on it:

"Someone dies or, even worse, [(someone,) they] hurt others."

Oh.

And they wonder why the elderly are crotchety!
