I grew up in Sant Louis in the ’40’s through he early ’60’s. In those days,
the best American English was spoken in the so-called "St. Louis Corridor.
We not only distinguished "caught" from "cot," but also "horse" from
"hoarse" and "fore" from "four." We really _cared_!
