Rachel Maddow Show, MSNBC, a few minutes ago:

"This President [of Gambia] won't leave office to make way for his
predecessor."

And no, his successor does not appear to have been his actual predecessor.

Cf. the once disbelieved-in "ancestor" 'descendant.'
