Given that the dog is actually going to catch the car at noon tomorrow, I thought it was a good time to look into the history of this currently very popular catchphrase. Executive summary: it appears as early as 1964, and by 2003 was described as an “oft-used metaphor.” The vehicles that have been substituted for car include bus and firetruck.
