You've said a taste! "Swan," indeed! Having heard this said in the 'hood
for the past 75 years or so, I had been under the impression that it was
nothing more than a street-level folk-saying. I had no idea that a giant of
American literature had written it. I made the same mistake WRT "What goes
around comes around," taking it to be merely an annoying,
pswaydo-intellectual catch-phrase used by a single member of the Los
Angeles black demi-monde with whom I had the misfortune to be acquainted,
from whose leaden tongue, "You got to bring ass to get ass" would have
fallen more trippingly.
