According to the internet at large, “sliding" is the criminal act of sneaking into a vehicle and stealing things while the driver is out filling up the gas tank or doing other things outside of the car.

Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/sliders.asp <http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/sliders.asp>) says it’s nothing new and not necessarily on the rise. 

According to New York Magazine (http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/07/new-crime-trend-that-probably-isnt.html <http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/07/new-crime-trend-that-probably-isnt.html>), “sliding” has been talked about since at least August 2013.
