Thanks for your response with the E.K. proposal. Do reporters for a newspaper typically contribute in the form of a letter to the editor?

Thanks for your response Stephen. The identity of E.K. is an
intriguing topic worthy of investigation, and I appreciate your
thoughts on the topic. Donna Halper (in an off-list message) indicated
that she believes: "E.K. is in fact Edward King, who was a young
correspondent (only 17) for the Journal, as well as for the
Springfield Republican. He covered a wide range of stories for the
Journal and was widely quoted in other newspapers. In the late 1860s,
he spent several years overseas in Paris and other cities in Europe as
the Journal's Foreign Correspondent before coming back to the States."

I decided not to propose candidate names for "E.K." within the QI
article at this time.

The article acknowledgement has changed. It was updated with thanks to
Donna Halper who spotted an inaccuracy in one of the citations. I also
decided to break the large block of text into multiple paragraphs.

He was born in Boston and had conversations with Lincoln before and after he was sent by Lincoln to Richmond in July 1864 with a conditional settlement offer to Jefferson Davis. Then he reported on the mission (with Lincoln editing) in The Atlantic.
