Back in June 2011 a discussion about the movie "The Usual Suspects"
occurred on the list. Allusions, confabulation, the spelling of Keyser
Soeze (Keyser Söze) and other topics were discussed. Now the Quote
Investigator website has an article about the saying in the subject
line:
https://quoteinvestigator.com/2018/03/20/devil/
It seems that the Devil is female in the original French but male in
English renditions of Charles Baudelaire's short story.
Precursors before 1836 would be welcome.
