Looks like this idiom has lost its connection to its literal sense, unless
these anonymous (American?) aren't familiar with the British term.

defines this with both the British "full stop" and the American "period".
The (initially confusing) "SE" and "SAmE" presumably stand for "slang
English" and "slang American English", not *Southeast and *South American
English.
