Greens Dictionary of Slang offers a 1925 "zit n.1 (US) facial hair."

Sausalito News, 8 June 1957, 8/2-3 [Elephind]:

In Novato Western Celebration Girls of Marin county are primping today as the men folk of Novato and environs begin growing “zits” in anticipation of the Second Annual Western Weekend Celebration at Novato, June 14-16..... Beards running the hirsute gamut from the mutton chops of adults to the "scragglies" of adolescence are already in evidence.

**
Zits as pimples is known from circa 1960? Connection??
(("Zitful cap" [with scarf?] may cover a certain area??)
