Or, perhaps, the show-business term, "number," referring to a routine in a
performance, is derived from this phrase. In the case of _do one of these
numbers_, the speaker mimes the whole "number", whether it be a mere
shifting of the eyes or an entire round of boxing, and not just a part of
it.
