[Ads-l] What is North America

I assume that today the "American Dialect Society" is all about American English Dialects rather than "North American" as it says at the home site.

I wonder what the 1889 thinking was when they said the ADS is focused on NORTH American dialects.  https://www.americandialect.org/   I assumed "American" was just USA.  Perhaps the word NORTH should be deleted.

Eight states joined the USA after 1889. Cuba and the Philippines would soon
become occupied territory. Perhaps they knew what they were doing.
