I grew up in Buffalo, NY and in New Britain, CT and then raised my own 
kids in Putnam, CT and Worcester, MA:

It was "monkey in the middle" in Buffalo; but in CT & MA, I encountered 
it as "pickle in the middle."

And usually it was a sibling-involved torment  . . .
