In a story, "The Serenade: a Tale of Revenge," by Frederick W. Saunders, in "The Flag of Our Union" {Boston] March 28, 1857. p. 100 col. 2 (p. 4 of the issue).

[A character at night runs into a clothesline, hitting his neck.]
"Heavens to Betsy!" he exclaims, clapping his hand to his throat, "I've cut my head off."
"Not quite, or you wouldn't  yell loud enough to wake the dead," replied Dick.<end>
