For ads-l members interested in the origin of The Big Apple (NYC's nickname),
here is an item that fills in a remaining piece of the puzzle:
Popik, Barry & Gerald Cohen 2019. The Big Apple -- NY Daily News T-shirts
(1975) Helped Spread the Nickname Revived by Public Relations Man Charles
Gillett. Comments on Etymology, December 2019, vol. 49, no. 3, pp. 16-20.

In 1992 Charles Gillett told me that T-shirts had helped to spread the
sobriquet (which he had revived), but I had no further details of just how
this happened. Thanks now to Barry Popik, we have those details.

Nickname The Big Apple_. 2011. 2nd, expanded edition
