The standard story about "Little Egypt" isn't so much classical as biblical - a drought north of the region caused a food shortage, alleviated by grain from southern Illinois which wasn't hit by the drought. SIU Carbondale's sports mascot is the saluki, an Egyptian hunting dog, coming from the same regional tradition.
