The adage in the subject line was spoken by the character Buckaroo
Banzai played by Peter Weller in the movie "The Adventures of Buckaroo
Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" in 1984.
“The Dictionary of Modern Proverbs” compiled by Charles Doyle,
Wolfgang Mieder, and Fred R. Shapiro contains an entry with citations
beginning in 1955.
Barry Popik has an entry with citations beginning in 1963.

The Quote Investigator website now has an entry with an interesting
precursor. The circa 1420 Latin work “The Imitation of Christ” by
Thomas à Kempis contains a passage which has been translated in
different ways. An 1881 translation says:
... wherever you go, you take yourself with you, and you will always
find yourself.
A 2006 translation says:
… for wherever you go you are burdened with yourself. Wherever you go,
there you are.
