Well, I missed Garson's link to Barry's earlier cites.  And yes, you can't trust quotes from sigs.  Most forum software stores sig files separately from posts, and if you change your signature, the forum will load that to all your old posts as they are displayed.

This is becoming something of a hot saying. It means, "Do something stupid,
pay the consequences."

I'm mainly seeing it in GOP contexts involving armed people shot by police
for ignoring police commands.
