Here is an article published in June 1782 with a dateline of May 18,
1782. The article described an artwork with "U.S.A" corresponding to
United States of America. The Revolutionary War continued into 1783.

which were to be seen three transparent paintings, executed by the
ingenious Mr. Peale, which drew particular attention.

On that of the middle were represented the United States of America,
by a circle of thirteen stars, in the midst whereof was the cypher U.
S. A. the whole was encircled with wreaths of laurels . . .
