Subject: [ADS-L] Request "The Progressive " magazine; "The real cause of problems is solutions" attributed to journalist Eric Sevareid

On the W0mbats mailing list an inquiry was made about a quotation
attributed to the journalist Eric Sevareid. A few different versions
of the quotation have been uncovered. Here is the data for the best
lead. The goal is to determine whether this data is accurate, and to
obtain scans or PDFs for complete verification:

Date: July 1968
Journal: The Progressive
Article: A Third Front for Liberals (maybe)
Author: Erwin Knoll (maybe)
Quote Page 16 (maybe)

[Begin excerpt]
. . . the greatest intellectual discovery of this generation is that
the real cause of problems is solutions.
[End excerpt]

Does your library have "The Progressive" in 1968. Do you have access
to a database of "The Progressive" in the pertinent time period? Most
online databases of "The Progressive" start too late, i.e., in the
1980s or 1990s.

A search for the phrase "cause of problems is solutions" in a database
that includes "The Progressive" indicates a match that is consistent
with some of this data. Here is a link to the pertinent search
engine:
http://metasearch.opinionarchives.com/

Another lead points to a CBS news program. To verify this data one
would need to access a transcript or a video segment.

Date: December 29, 1970
Television Program: CBS News
Speaker: Eric Sevareid

[Begin excerpt]
The chief cause of problems is solutions.
[End excerpt]

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Garson O'Toole
