PROVINCIAL NOMENCLATURES [in northern Florida]

The negro's appellations for many things in nature are extremely amusing.
... The "coot" is a "Blue Peter;" the cormorant is the "nigger turkey," the
bittern is the "nigger boy."

Also mentioned are the familiar "cooter," "alligator cooter,"
"pecker-wood," and "'gator."
