The OED cites, in square brackets, a French precursor of the term "Third World," dated 1956.  An earlier precursor, essentially the coinage of "Third World," was by Alfred Sauvy in L'Observateur, August 14, 1952 ("tiers monde").  See the New Yale Book of Quotations for the full quotation.
