1848 Milwaukee Sentinel (June 5) 2 [quoting Chicago Advertiser]: Why if
you tax one you ought to tax both. Sock it to 'em! They charge too much for
flour any how.

1855 Shasta [Calif.] Courier (June 23) 2: We intend to 'sock' it to you.

And "sock it to me" (i.e., "let me have it!"):

1878 Chicago Daily News (June 6) 1: God! but how he'll sock it to me when I
go up for trial!
