Google has changed the user interface a few times over the years. In
the recent past you could construct search queries with date
constraints for the Google Groups / Usenet Archive, e.g.:

"rather argue against a hundred" AND before:1993/12/12

It seems that queries of this type no longer work.

You can tell the search engine to use chronological ordering, but it
starts with the most recent date, and it stops working properly after
a couple hundred items.
