1901 _Minneapolis Journal_ (Aug. 6) 10: AMERICAN LEAGUE. McNeil, the newest
"rookie" in the American League, tried his cunning against the white sox
[sic] yesterday.

1903 _Minneapolis Journal_ (May 30) 3: The Indians...Win by
7-1....Salisbury, the most recent "rookie," was touched up liberally.

1907 _Washington Star_ (June 23) V 3: He had a lot of rookie pitchers along
with him...and all were scheduled to be hiked back to the minors.
