Science fiction author Neal Stephenson used the term “metaverse” in
his 1992 novel “Snow Crash”.  In 2021 Mark Zuckerberg employed the
word “metaverse”, and renamed his company “Meta”.

Now, MTV Video Music Awards have introduced an award called “Best
Metaverse Performance”.  The term “metaverse” is being applied to
current online videogames instead of some future technology. A
metaverse performance refers to animated avatars of band members
combined with an audio channel within an online videogame. See the
list of bands below for the 2022 award.

K-Pop band Blackpink (BLɅϽKPIИK) won the 2022 MTV Video Music Award
for “Best Metaverse Performance”.

One of the early high-profile concerts of this type featured a live
performance by Marshmello who wore a motion-capture suit to animate
his avatar in the online videogame Fortnite on February 2, 2019.
