Less well-known is that a sub-set of the Survey of English Dialects sites were then used for the Atlas Linguarum Europae. This was a very ambitious work, which attempted to plot dialects across Europe. I'm not sure why the ALE is so poorly-documented in the English language: I have had to use my German skills to work out what happened. The recordings are held at the University of Sheffield's special collections. When I contacted them about this last month, they said that their hardware for playing the digitised recordings needs to be replaced and they weren't sure when that would happen. I find it puzzling that more is not done to unlock the potential of this collection, but maybe I'll find out that there's a reason why they're not so useful when I finally get to listen to them.
