I recently put together some research on very early uses of "tar heels" and
how the epithet may have been attached to North Carolinians. Some of this
has appeared on ADS-L before, but I thought I should make a more coherent
story out of these posts and incorporate some of your suggestions and finds.

If you're interested, you can read about this at

Comments, questions, and criticisms are welcome, of course.

I'm grateful to ADS-L members for their feedback along the way, especially
Fred Shapiro, who made me aware of an important Civil War diary containing
the moniker. I also owe thanks to Garson O'Toole and Peter Reitan, who
shared on the list important examples of the phrase "tar on the heel."
