It's a long-existing insult, comparable to "dork", "nerd", etc.  I used to hear it from a few folks in college, in the 1980s.

HDAS has cites and suggests a 1940s Warner Bros. cartoon in which Bugs Bunny refers to Elmer Fudd as a "nimrod" as a vector.

But sometimes I think you act like a total Nimrod.
