Way back in 2005 (before I joined this mailing list) Bonnie
Taylor-Blake found the phrase "Falsehood flies, and the truth comes
limping after it" in a 1710 essay by Jonathan Swift.

The Swift quotation is mentioned in a popular QI article about an
apocryphal Twain quotation: A Lie Can Travel Halfway Around the World
While the Truth Is Putting On Its Shoes (Boots)
https://quoteinvestigator.com/2014/07/13/truth/
Bonnie is acknowledged in the QI article because she found several of
the crucial citations.
