One of the common examples in American
dialect texts is 'spicket' for spigot.
Like 'spider' (for skillet) I'd never
actually heard it. But the guy coming
to replace the faucet (ha!) in our back
yard on Tuesday has actually been saying
'spicket'. Local SE Michigan to the best
of my knowledge--mid forties, probably.
Just thought those of you who have taught
American Dialects or read about them
might enjoy the live report.
FWIW the word did not come up in a search
of the archives, so apologies if this
has been discussed earlier.
