1835 _Evening Star_ (New York) 21 Sept. 1/7 (America's Historical Newspapers)  The Montreal Herald states that a number of Indians from the lake of the Two Mountains, and an equal number from Caughawangau, recently met on the St. Pierre race course, to contend at the game of _La Crosse_.

NOTE:  Presumably a slightly earlier occurrence of this term was in the Montreal Herald.
