Nothing really of note here, but the topic seemed timely.
Barry Popik, cc'd here, has a 13 May 1952 example of "veepstakes." It
appeared in Earl Wilson's column and in its headline that day.

The same column had appeared in The New York Post just a few days
earlier. (If Wilson didn't coin "veepstakes," he certainly did a lot
to popularize the term.)
